After running a recent update on Ubuntu, the operating system failed to boot after installing the updates. Choosing past kernel versions in the startup list didn't help. I grew frustrated and uninstalled Ubuntu from within Windows, which is the way I chose to install it.

I must say that I can no longer recommend that method of installation. I found my Windows half of the computer to be very slowed down by some unknown force. I suspect it was the Ubuntu installation, because Windows feels sped up now that I removed it. Furthermore, I noticed during the failed attempts to boot Ubuntu that it was running the NTFS file system. Of course. How could it be any other way when installing in Windows? I am now highly suspect of this type of install.

Again, adding the two local bookmarks that I mentioned in this article are my favorite way to go with this, and doesn't require any extension at all. I thought I should include the links themselves:

1)

name: post to del.icio.us
url (all one line): javascript:location.href='http://del.icio.us/post?v=4;url=' encodeURIComponent(location.href) ';title=' encodeURIComponent(document.title)

2)

name: my del.icio.us
url (all one line): javascript:location.href='http://del.icio.us/home';

I should add a footnote to this post. Firefox 2.0 was released in October of 2006. That means that despite the reported 34-month development period for Firefox 3.0, it has not been nearly that long since version 2.0 was released.

Firefox 3.0 is out in final form today!

I think it's all about drivers. Since Apple controls the hardware, they don't have to deal with a billion manufacturers and customers calling all the time asking why their software doesn't support some random sound card made in outer Mongolia. People have had success building Hackintosh boxes as a hobby, but I don't think Apple wants to hold anyone's hand when setting up a box from scratch.

I just ate a Swiss Cake Roll and was disgusted. I am only 24 years old, and I have been eating Swiss Cake Rolls for my entire life. (and no, I am not an extremely overweight person; just slightly overweight). I would say it has been about three months since I last ate a Swiss Cake Roll and it was just like it was when I was a kid. SOMETHING HAS CHANGED!

Now, Swiss Cake Rolls are more like Hostess Ho-Hos: like cardboard, or plastic, and not soft and creamy. WE NEED TO TAKE THIS TO LITTLE DEBBIE HERSELF! Let's urge them to go back to the original recipe.

Comment on Time Machine by Craig

In the time since I wrote this post and my first comment, I have settled on using manual backups with Time Machine. To do this, simply turn the Time Machine off. On the menu bar, you can click at any time and say "Back up now". This is easier for me, and I try to do it once a day or so.

I grew frustrated that when Time Machine was on, it would often inconveniently start up when I woke my computer from sleep. This would happen regardless of the intervals I tried to set with the Terminal commands. I decided, in the end, it would be easier to just back up my data manually.

I should mention that I'd read in Macworld that if you use Entourage, keep in mind that your data is stored in a single file, and every update to that file from Entourage will cause Time Machine to back up that whole file every hour, if left untamed. Being a new Entourage user, this was also good reason to go manual on the backing up.

I should follow up my Ubuntu post by saying that the OS did automatically find and mount my Windows partition. It just doesn't put it on the desktop by default. Access to my Windows drive is in the /host folder in the root of the Linux filesystem. An odd location, to me, since it used to be in a /mount or /mnt folder in the past.

A full week after Firefox 3.0 RC1 was released, Ubuntu still hasn't updated the browser from the beta 5 that came with Ubuntu 8. While I'm not certain if it's customary to update to release candidates, it shows the rub I have with Linux. Users are often at the complete will of the provider to offer up updated versions of included software.

I can't believe I phrased it that way. How insane. Hopefully, everyone will get the idea. I'm implying the act of removing an app, along with the shared files and extras it scatters throughout the system.

Since the time of this post about Camino, version 1.6 has become available. It is nice, and sports a few new upgrades. But I must say that since Firefox 3.0 RC1 was released this weekend, it is just as fast as Camino, if not faster. The new default theme for the Firefox 3 on the Mac gives Camino a run for the money. (Yes, I know they're all free!)

OH MY GOSH! I TOTALLY AGREE...

This might sound nuts, but I've gone looking for the ORIGINAL Swiss Cake Roll, like when I was a kid. They didn't even have the chocolate frosting. Just moist cake and rich cream. Yum! I hate the Little Debbie's. And Drake's version (Yodels, I think?) aren't much better.

My question to you is this: WHO made those Swiss Cake rolls? I can't come up with the company... not Nabisco...is it? Do you know? Or are you talking about just the Little Debbie's getting yucky?

XP SP3 was released via automatic updates yesterday, May 6, 2008. I upgraded my Dell laptop computer, which took at least an hour to perform the upgrade, but afterward, everything seems to be working fine. I have noticed no noticable differences from my SP2 environment, but it is good that Microsoft finally released a service pack that includes all of the updates since SP2. But shouldn't we be on SP6 by now? A service pack should be released annually, no?
